How to Read a Guitar Fretboard

The fretboard has 6 strings (top to bottom: low E, A, D, G, B, high E) and metal frets. Each fret raises the pitch by one semitone. Fret 12 is exactly one octave above the open string — this is why patterns repeat across the neck.
